How to Choose a Homeschool Math Curriculum
Choosing a math curriculum can feel overwhelming, but it comes down to a handful of practical questions. Work through these and the right fit usually becomes clear.
1. Consider how your child learns
Does your child thrive on routine and repetition, or do they want to understand the concept before drilling it? Visual learners often do well with Singapore Math-Dimensions' bar models and pictures; students who need steady review often do well with Saxon's spiral structure.
2. Be honest about your time
Some programs are teacher-intensive and assume a parent will deliver each lesson. If you're short on time — or not confident teaching upper-level math — a program with video lessons and automatic grading does the heavy lifting for you, so your student can learn independently.
3. Decide on spiral vs. mastery
This is the biggest pedagogical choice. Spiral programs (like Saxon) review constantly; mastery programs (like Singapore Math-Dimensions and Math-U-See) go deep on one topic at a time. Read our spiral vs. mastery guide to decide which fits your child.
4. Start at the right level
Don't assume your child's grade equals their math level — curricula sequence topics differently. A free placement test is the most reliable way to find the right starting point, especially if you're switching programs.
5. Factor in cost and materials
You'll usually buy your own textbooks (a one-time cost) and, if you choose a video program, a subscription for the lessons and grading. Watching a few free sample lessons before you commit is the best way to confirm the teaching style works for your family.
6. Still deciding? Try Nicole's Math Match Quiz
If you've worked through these questions and are still torn between two programs, let the Math Match Quiz break the tie. It asks about the same things covered in this guide — how your child learns, how much time you have, and spiral vs. mastery — and turns your answers into a personalized curriculum recommendation.
