How do I know which textbook is for which grade level?

The textbook titles for the “homeschool” line of textbooks can be a bit confusing. The rule is to concentrate on the second number to determine what is typically “on-grade level.”

  • Saxon Math 5/4 is on-grade level for 4th grade and for a 5th grader who may need to take it at a slower pace.
  • Saxon Math 6/5 is on-grade level for 5th grade and for a 6th grader who may need to take it at a slower pace.
  • Saxon Math 7/6 is on-grade level for 6th grade and for a 7th grader who may need to take it at a slower pace.
  • Saxon Math 8/7 is on-grade level for 7th grade and for an 8th grader who may need to take it at a slower pace.
  • Algebra 1/2 is often taken by 8th graders.
  • Algebra 1 is often taken by 8th or 9th graders.

Remember, its more important to meet the child where he/she is at versus just picking a grade level they “should” be in. When in doubt, take the placement test and use it as a guide to help you decide where your child should be.
