What kind of curriculum is Saxon Math?

Saxon Math is a spiral-learning curriculum. Each lesson introduces a new concept. Students then practice those concepts in the weeks to come. One benefit of this methodology is that students tend not to forget the concepts that they’ve learned. Learn more about getting started with Saxon Math.

How do I know where to place my student if coming from a different program?

Saxon Math is based on skill level, not grade level. If you are moving to Saxon Math from a different curriculum, have your student take a placement test and learn how to get started.

Is Saxon Math Common Core?

No. Saxon Math has two lines of textbooks. The line designed for homeschoolers does NOT cover Common Core Standards. However, the line that Saxon markets to schools does have a similar focus to Common Core Standards with more word problems and a focus on a real-world application of math. Is Saxon Math being discontinued?

The line designed for homeschoolers is NOT being discontinued. However, in 2023, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will stop printing their “school” line of textbooks including Intermediate 3, Intermediate 4, Intermediate 5, Course 1, Course 2, Course 3, Algebra 1- 4th Ed, Algebra 2- 4th Ed, and Geometry. The homeschool line will continue to be printed.

Is Saxon Math hard?

Saxon Math is a rigorous curriculum whose students excel in standardized tests. However, your student doesn't have to be naturally gifted in math to excel at it. Nicole makes the concepts easy for ANY student to understand. Learn more on how to help when it gets hard.

How do I know which textbook is for which grade level?

The homeschool line has two numbers on the textbook (ex. Saxon Math 8/7). The second number indicated what is typical "on-grade" level and the first number indicates the level of a struggling student.

Do I need to purchase textbooks?

Yes. Nicole's videos are designed to work in conjunction with the Saxon Math curriculum. You will need the textbooks to access the practice problems. In most cases, we recommend you purchase the kit which includes the Textbook, the Solutions Manual, and the Test Booklet.

How long are the videos?

Nicole's videos are clear and concise. Most lower and mid-level topics range from 7-10 minutes, while upper-level math topics range from 8-15 minutes. You can watch sample videos or sign-up for a free trial to see Nicole's teaching style in action.

Does my student have to do all of the practice problems?

For best results, Saxon Math recommends that students do all of the practice problems. While we agree that doing all practice problems leads to high-achieving math students, we also believe you have to balance this with making the program work for your student. Some families chose to do fewer problems. That's why our online grading gives you the option to select the number of practice problems your student does. You can select all problems, just odds or evens, or handpick the specific problems you'd like them to do in a particular lesson.

What if my student needs more practice on a specific topic?

Your student can access our Extra Practice Problems Mastery Bank which is a bank of over 10,000 unique practice problems. Just search for your topic and request the number of practice problems you would like. Students can enter their answers directly into the system which will grade them.

Which editions can this be used with?

Nicole used the most recent editions to film her videos. However, she uses unique practice problems that can be used across editions. If you have an earlier edition check to see if Nicole has created a correlation sheet, which tells you which videos to watch for the lessons in your edition.
