What is Online Grading? How does Online Grading work?

Online Grading is a feature that many have described as:

  • a game-changer!
  • a relationship-saver!
  • a stress-reducer!
  • the thing that keeps math moving forward in our home!

Not only is it an amazing feature for the parent/teacher, it is an educational tool your student can use to reduce mistakes, increase learning and gain independence.

Online Grading does NOT, however, remove the parent/teacher from the student’s learning process. Instead, it was designed to be used by the parent/teacher to help better understand a student’s trouble spots and to guide when/where a student needs extra attention.

Here’s how Online Grading works:

  1. After watching the video, the student moves onto doing the assignments.  The assignments problems can be found in the student's textbook.
  2. The student solves the first problem.  (For Saxon Math, we recommend students do their work in a separate spiral notebook as the textbook does not provide enough space to work out the problems.)
  3. The student enters the answer to the first question in the system.
  4. The system provides immediate feedback of “correct” or “incorrect.”
    • If the answer is correct, the student celebrates and moves on to the next problem.
    • If the answer is incorrect, the student can use additional attempts (set by the parent/teacher) to rework the problem and enter a new answer.
      • Since Saxon Math is a spiral learning program, a link to the lesson where that problem’s concept was originally taught so the student can rewatch it as needed.)
    • Student can flag questions to come back to them, as needed.
    • Unanswered questions will be marked incomplete.
  5. After completing problem #1, the student should move directly to problem #2. We don’t recommend that students work out all the problems on paper first and then enter their answers at once. If a mistake is made early in the assignment, it’s important that they know right away so they can correct it, rather than continuing the entire practice set under the impression their earlier answer was correct.
  6. When the student has completed all of the problems and checked all of their answers, they click “submit for grading.”
  7. The parent/teacher immediately receives an email showing which assignment was completed, how many answers were correct, which answers took multiple attempts, which answers were incorrect and more.

And here’s how the parent/teacher can utilize Online Grading:

  • The parent/teacher wastes no time on grading the assignment; that part is done!
  • The parent/teacher follows up with the student on trouble spots as needed.
  • Detailed reports can be found inside the Parent/Teacher Account at anytime.
  • The parent/teacher has the ability to award points after the fact and can also reset the assignment for the student to redo.
  • NTML does not assign a grade for the assignment or course, but the parent/teacher can easily utilize the data we provide to assign a grade.
