Even relatively short, regular sessions can be more beneficial than doing a large amount of work once or twice a week.

And there’s good science behind this.

Our brains learn through repetition

Learning something once doesn’t mean we’ve learned it permanently.

When we encounter new information, our brains have to build connections between that new information and what we already know. Those connections become stronger when we return to the information, use it, and retrieve it again over time.

One of the most well-established findings in learning science is called the spacing effect: spreading learning out over time generally leads to better long-term retention than concentrating the same amount of practice into one sitting.

A large review of hundreds of experiments found substantial evidence that spacing learning episodes apart improves later retention.

In other words:

A little today + a little tomorrow + a little later is often better for long-term learning than doing it all at once.

That’s one reason consistency matters.

Math is especially cumulative

Math isn’t a collection of completely separate lessons.

Instead, mathematical ideas are connected.

A student may learn multiplication, then use multiplication when learning fractions. Fractions become important when learning ratios and proportions. Those ideas later show up in algebra.

When an older skill isn’t solid, a new lesson can suddenly feel much harder than it should.

The National Academies’ research on mathematics learning emphasizes the importance of building on students’ existing knowledge and developing both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.

That’s why you may occasionally see a student struggle with something that seems unrelated to what they’re currently studying.

Sometimes the problem isn’t today’s lesson.

There’s a missing piece underneath it.

Regular practice gives students more opportunities to strengthen those earlier skills and connect them to new ones.

Practice isn’t just about getting more problems done

Here’s another interesting piece of learning science:

Retrieving information from memory actually helps strengthen learning.

Research on retrieval practice has found that actively recalling information can produce better long-term retention than simply studying the same material again.

That’s one reason doing math problems is so valuable.

Your child isn’t simply “doing worksheets.”

They’re practicing the process of:

I see a problem → I figure out what I know → I retrieve the appropriate skill → I apply it → I check my thinking.

Every time they successfully retrieve and use a mathematical idea, they’re getting another opportunity to strengthen that knowledge.

And when they get something wrong, that’s useful information, too. It tells us where the learning isn’t solid yet.

And there’s specific research on math

Researchers have actually tested spacing with mathematics students.

In classroom experiments with seventh-grade students, students who distributed their math practice across multiple sessions performed better on a test one month later than students who concentrated their practice into a single session.

Other research has examined interleaved mathematics practice, where different types of problems are mixed across assignments rather than practicing one type exclusively. The Institute of Education Sciences describes this approach as a way to improve learning and retention, and classroom research has found benefits from this kind of practice.

So when we talk about consistency, we’re not simply saying:

“Your child should do math because that’s what you do in school.”

There’s a much more important reason.

Regular practice gives the brain repeated opportunities to learn, retrieve, connect, and strengthen mathematical knowledge.

What does consistency actually look like?

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

For many families, something as simple as:

Monday → Math
Tuesday → Math
Wednesday → Math
Thursday → Math
Friday → Math

is a great rhythm.

And if you miss a day?

Don’t panic.

Consistency doesn’t mean perfection.

If Wednesday gets swallowed up by soccer practice, a doctor’s appointment, or just one of those days, pick it back up on Thursday.

The goal is to create a rhythm where math becomes a normal part of your child’s week—not something they have to relearn every time they sit down.

One small thing you can do this week

Take a look at your child’s schedule and choose 4–5 days that can become their regular math days.

Put them on the calendar.

Make it predictable.

Then let Nicole the Math Lady take care of the rest. ❤️

Because when students practice consistently, they’re not just finishing today’s lesson.

They’re building the foundation for everything they’ll learn next.

Sources & Further Reading

Cepeda, N.
