I tried to make it fun with a silly frog theme where the kids progressed across their paper pond coloring lily pads labeled “+5” or “doubles” as they mastered a new set of facts.

A few of my students thrived with this approach and mastered all their facts in record time.

And it seemed to work well enough for the bulk of my students. And then multiple times each week, I told him to “hop to it!”

It’s what I knew. It’s what had worked for me. Those lessons did not set a timer to his abilities or ask him to prove he knew his math facts, but the angst we both felt over those math drills followed us into all things math-related.

Getting him to memorize his math facts seemed hopeless and the idea of gaining math fluency seemed in jeopardy too.

🚨The problem with timed math drills

Eventually, we stopped the timed drills.

Not because I figured out a better way to get him to master his facts—but because I didn’t want to continue putting him through the stress.

So, I dropped the timed math drills, lowered my expectations and mentally prepared myself to have a student who was simply “not good at math.”

And then something surprising happened…

He learned his math facts.

He just learned them through other methods:

Games

Conversations

Practice without pressure

Time

Not “timed”. Differentiation is, in my opinion, one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle titled “Successful Education.”

For years, I had been shouting this from the rooftops (or at least energetically discussing in the Teacher’s Lounge) in relation to how kids learn to read. Absolutely!

Can you have math fluency without having all of your math facts memorized at the speed of light? Yes.

Can you have your math facts memorized without having math fluency? Also yes.

When students have a strong understanding of number sense, they can easily and accurately manipulate numbers. And when they are given the time to use these strategies and hone these skills, automaticity will come. And for some, racing the clock to knock out math facts is a helpful tool that helps them memorize facts.

But, when students are anxious, their brains literally don’t work as efficiently.

Using timed math drills to assess math fluency can create a false impression that a student has “a problem understanding math.”

When, in fact, they actually have a “problem dealing with pressure.”

>>>And the worst part is the more they struggle to succeed at timed math drills, the more the pressure builds. The more pressure, the more likely it will boil over into all things math-related. And as that happens, the further and further a student falls down the trap of “not being good at math” and giving up on math fluency.<<<

⚠️How timed math drills should be used today

I still believe in building automaticity.

But I no longer believe that timed drills are the only, let alone the best, path for every student.

Frankly, I am embarrassed that I ever did.

I wish I could take back that time with my son and redo the approach with my First Graders.
