He\u2019s doing seven math problems from <a href=\"https:\/\/nicolethemathlady.com\/mastery-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mastery Bank<\/a> on simplifying fractions. (As some of you may remember from <a href=\"https:\/\/nicolethemathlady.com\/announcements\/heres-how-to-close-the-math-gaps-starting-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my last email<\/a>, Justin and I are working on closing some of his math gaps over the holidays.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system gives him the following problem to simplify: 10\/6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hmmm\u2026an improper fraction.&nbsp; Let\u2019s see how he handles it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He picks up his pencil and scribbles something that vaguely resembles numbers on the page.&nbsp; He then looks at me and says, \u201c1 4\/6?\u201d with that questioning tone that is checking to see if he\u2019s got the right answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I respond, \u201cHave you simplified it all the way?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He picks up his pencil and reworks the numbers.&nbsp; He then eagerly types in 1 2\/3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The site pings back the sweet sound of success that he has gotten the correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disaster averted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All is well in the Nicole the Math Lady house\u2026.or is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Plot Twist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an uneasy feeling in my stomach, but I let it subside long enough for him to tackle the next problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cut back to the kitchen counter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justin moves on to the next problem.&nbsp; The computer tells him to simplify 14\/8\u2026another improper fraction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He picks up his pencil and scribbles some numbers on the page.&nbsp; He again looks at me and with that questioning voice asks, \u201c1 6\/8?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, I say \u201cTry it!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He enters \u201c1 6\/8\u201d in the answer field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of that sweet ding of success, he gets the \u201cnope, you didn\u2019t get that right, mister\u201d whistle.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My heart stops in anticipation wondering how he\u2019s going to react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He scrunches up his eyebrows and says \u201cHumph.\u201d&nbsp; Once again, he picks up the pencil, scribbles some more numbers on the page, and enters \u201c1 \u00be\u201d into the answer field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, he gets the bing!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What did I do wrong the first time?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>OK..the word \u201cwrong\u201d might be a bit harsh, so let me rephrase that.&nbsp; What did I do better the second time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second time, I gave him the gift of getting it wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See, when I put on my supermom cape and \u201chelped\u201d him along to the right answer, I actually robbed him of the thought process that takes place when we get something wrong.&nbsp; You might not have been able to see it, so let\u2019s check the replay to see what really happened.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rewind to the scene at the kitchen counter\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he got the \u201cyou didn\u2019t get that right, mister\u201d whistle, he stopped and asked himself, \u201cWhy did I get that wrong?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He rechecked his answer to make sure he typed the numbers correctly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He then looked at his answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He wondered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, he thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brain synapses fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then he had his aha moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said to himself, \u201cOh, I didn\u2019t simplify it all the way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He simplified the problem and with zeal, typed in the correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His ace-troubleshooting skills found the issue!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And that\u2019s exactly what we want to happen.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s face it.&nbsp; Most of our kids, once they are grown, are not going to use trigonometry or calculus in their daily lives.&nbsp; But they are going to need to use troubleshooting and problem-solving skills EVERY DAY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is why we do math!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in the New Year, I\u2019m going to calm that instinct I have as a mom to help my kid get to the right answer.&nbsp; It\u2019s okay for him to struggle a little.&nbsp; In fact, it\u2019s absolutely necessary.&nbsp; Without the struggle, the caterpillar can\u2019t build up the wing strength to get out of the cocoon.&nbsp; So next time you feel the urge to jump in and help, remember we\u2019re creating butterflies here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy New Year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicole the Math Lady<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S.
